Small Muji Exhibition: Transforming The Common To The Uncommon

Muji Singapore has most recently revamped the Muji store experience at its Plaza Singapura outlet. Previously housing a cafe, offering renovation services, and a bicycle section, they now have expanded to also offer an art gallery. Revamped Muji Plaza Singapura is the brand’s largest flagship store in Southeast Asia.

Introducing the first art exhibition for the renovated outlet: Small Muji Exhibition featuring curated works by Photographer Tatsuya Tanaka. Tanaka is a well known photographer known for his miniature exhibits depicting every day living through the use of household materials and objects. This exhibit houses Tanaka’s 19 works, some of which resemble iconic architectural landmarks in Singapore. Tanaka’s skilful talent of reimagining what a miniature model of these scenes of everyday life would look like, combines the use of these necessary household objects to bring these concepts to life.

Tanaka says that his inspiration for these miniature models come from finding motifs that come from commonplace objects. This is where the collaboration between Muji and Tatsuya Tanaka is a merge of masterful artistry transforming the common to the uncommon, and diverse and high quality everyday commonplace items. Muji’s products harmonize well with his artwork and concepts citing that these products are ‘stackable, connectable and interchangeable’ that allow for flexibility and expansion of his collection.
