We live in strange times. We’re confronted by an invisible enemy that is able to shake up the world’s largest economies. Isn’t it ironic that authorities around the world start injecting cash to keep the economy on track but when it comes to eliminating poverty and hunger, and providing equal education opportunities, none of that cash comes in? Just my two cents worth of thoughts.
Running out of words to describe the state of the world right now, instead, I’ve picked out 10 songs. #StayWoke
1. “Ghost Town” – The Specials
This town (town) is coming like a ghost town
All the clubs have been closed down
There is a song about Ghost Town! The track was inspired by the riots taking place in Britain’s inner cities during 1981. Today, many countries have imposed lockdown due to COVID-19 and people are instructed to stay at home, leaving the streets empty like a ghost town.
2. “Panic” – The Smiths
Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again?
The external circumstances are beyond humanity’s control and that give rise to panic-buying so as to feel ‘in control’.
3. “Karma Police” – Radiohead
A haunting, atmospheric track by Radiohead. Looks like we have taken Earth’s resources and biodiversity for granted. Coronavirus is a wake-up call to our treatment of the animal world.
4. “I Guess I Just Feel Like” – John Mayer
I guess I just feel like
Nobody’s honest
Nobody’s true
Everyone’s lying
To make it on through
Is this pandemic inevitable? I’d like to think so.
5. “Time” – Childish Gambino and Ariana Grande
Maybe all the stars in the night are really dreams
Maybe this whole world ain’t exactly what it seems
Maybe the sky will fall down on tomorrow
But one thing’s for certain, baby
We’re running out of time
6. “Maybe Tomorrow” – Stereophonics
So maybe tomorrow
I’ll find my way home
Those who are most at risk during these precarious times are the homeless ones and this is clearly evident in the UK.
7. “Strange Things Happening Everyday” – Fern Jones
There are strange TikToks breaking the internet every day.
8. “Nowhere to Run” – Martha Reeves & The Vandellas
Nowhere to run to, baby, nowhere to hide
Got nowhere to run to, baby, nowhere to hide
To contain the virus outbreak, many countries have imposed draconian measures ranging from travel restrictions, forced quarantine to halting all businesses and public events.
9. “What’s Going On” – Marvin Gaye
Mother, mother
There’s too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way
It’s a race against time, as the number of cases is increasing day by day. Scientists around the world are trying to develop a vaccine for COVID-19.
10. “I Want To Break Free” – Queen
I got to break free
I want to break free
Cabin fever is real. From the look of things, it’s unlikely for public events, concerts and air travel to get back on schedule. Just when will this pandemic be over?
