The next time you are suffering from sleeplessness, you can head to the only 24hour bookstore in town. Get lost among the stocked shelves filled with a near-endless supply of books — filled with words of knowledge, wisdom, and tales, perhaps find yourself in another imaginary universe.
Compared to places like Japan and Taiwan, where 24-hour bookstores are the norm, Malaysia’s book scene often lacked this option. But now, that gap has seemingly been filled by the relatively new branch of this local bookstore franchise. In particular, BookXcess @ Tamarind Square, Cyberjaya is a bookstore that is open 24/7, 365 days a year.
A Little Backstory on BookXcess
Before we delve further into the 24-hour BookXcess bookstore, here’s a little history lesson on the local book retailer.
BookXcess was founded in 2006. It began with a simple idea: to make books affordable and accessible to everyone. To that end, the humble bookstore began their journey by offering various discounts on their books, all year round.
You may be wondering how they managed to do this. BookXcess leverages on remainder books — brand new and unsold books that would otherwise be dumped, pulped or shredded. The company buys these books at a discount and then pass on the savings to the customers.
The result? A rabid following comprising the local book-lovers community that flock to their many stores located throughout Malaysia. And to add to that, BookXcess offers titles at a 50-80% cheaper rate compared to its original price, which is deffo a plus in our books (pun intended).
24-Hour Book Haven
This branch first opened its doors to the public in late May of 2018 and features a 37,000 square foot space. As for their facilities, the premises has an expansive book area separated by topics and genre. There’s also a children’s area to occupy your little ones while you take a stroll through bookworm wonderland.
There’s even a spacious and comfortable reading corner for those who want to sample books they’re interested in before purchasing it. And if you are a solitary reader, individual reading desks are available for you to use. Imagine separating yourself from the world and delving into the realm of the book you are currently reading. Lovely.
Other than that, the large premises also contain two event spaces and a stage. And for those that are inclined to sip on a cup of coffee while they read, there is a café available in the bookstore.
Also, the free Wi-Fi and air-conditioning mean that you can work or study at any time of the day — yes, even if it’s at 1.00 am in the morning. If you need fuel to burn the midnight oil, the aforementioned inhouse (or rather in the bookstore) Café Wolf will provide all the coffee you need.
As for the books, you’ll definitely be spoilt for choice as there are more than 500,000 titles in the outlet. Though, the fact that you can pull all-nighters here means you can take your time exploring their vast catalogue.
