You cannot say you have been to Hong Kong if you have never dined in a cha chaan teng and Kam Kee Cafe, is a stalwart in Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng scene. Started in 1967 by “Grandpa Kam”, the humble cafe has served out comfort food to the Shau Kei Wan neighbourhood for more than 40 years before the shop was taken over by its current owners and shifted to its current location at Sai Ying Pun. Kam Kee’s Hong Kong style-milk tea is said to be one of the best in Hong Kong and a favourite of singer-actor Dicky Cheung.

Curry Yudan (Fishballs) is the quintessential Hong Kong street food that you simply must try when in Hong Kong. Tak Hing Fishball Company, located in Kowloon City, started as a wholesaler for fresh fishballs, hand-beaten daily by Mr Lam Tak Hing, who has been making fishballs since he was 14 years old. Recognized by his strong arms and beard on his face, you may also spot his colourful portrait on their shop’s shutters, which was part of the Hong Kong Urban Canvas project, a community art project that showcased shutter artworks in six districts to celebrate community inclusion and highlights local culture.

While you may not be able to enjoy the full menu of treats from the 3 brands in Singapore, you can still comfort yourself with the signature offerings of Hoover’s egg tarts, Kam Kee’s pineapple buns and hong kong-style milk tea, Tai Hing’s curry fishballs as well as a variety of desserts and drinks that can usually be found in a Cha Chaan Teng.
