Want free WiFi the next time you fly? (Who doesn’t?!) Well, point your browser to Air New Zealand to book your next flight, because the carrier is generously providing WiFi to all passengers, for FREE.
Yep, you read that right. In a time when other airlines are carving away basic flight services and re-selling them to you, Air New Zealand is bravely bucking the trend. The airline promises WiFi connectivity while up in the air as long as you’re booked on a plane equipped with the necessary hardware.
The newer planes in the fleet – A321neos and A320neos – already come WiFi ready, while retrofitting has begun for the 777s. The airline says it will start installing WiFi capabilities in their 737s later this year.
How to Get Connected
To enjoy your free WiFi, simply log on to the in-flight WiFi network (Air NZ_InflightWiFi), and navigate to wifi.airnz.com. Follow the instructions and you’ll be connected in a flash.
Take note though that in-flight WiFi is only available after take-off and before descent.
Also, because getting connected while moving at hundreds of kilometers per hour isn’t exactly a simple affair (read: satellite hide-and-seek) expect things to be a little slower than you’re used to on the ground.
What is In-flight WiFi For?
Anything you please – as long as it’s legal.
Come now, just because you’re traversing international borders while up in the air doesn’t mean your Internet will be a free-for-all.
The airline (wisely) filters the content you can access for the comfort of your seatmates. So, stick to selfies and live-Tweeting the snoring orchestra going on in Row 34.
Additionally, bandwidth-hogging activities such as VoIP, cloud services, video streaming and the like will be blocked, allowing everyone a fair chance to set those last-minute Out-of-Office responders.
