JAPAN, Osaka – Towering over the city of Shinsekai in Osaka, Tsutenkaku Tower is the largest and most famous attraction in the area.

Though present-day visitors are unlikely to find its 100m height to be particularly impressive, the original structure – built in 1912 and standing at 64m – was the second tallest structure in Asia at that time, earning the attraction a well-deserved place in the hearts of Osakans. So popular is the tower that despite being dismantled after a fire in 1943, residents campaigned successfully to bring back the tower and all its Old World glamour.

The attraction is presided over by Billiken, an impish good luck charm originally imported from America, whose statues are scattered all over the area. Approach one to find Billiken’s official title engraved around his pedestal – “God of Things as They Ought to Be.” A fittingly sanguine motto for a monument created amidst a backdrop of pre-war optimism.

The area is also known for restaurants specialising in fugu (blowfish sashimi). Remember to stroke Billiken’s feet for good luck before trying the potentially deadly dish
