The Hainan Story Bakery: Deliciously Singaporean Buns

If you’re a fan of The Hainan Story already, you’ll definitely love what they have to offer at their bakery. The best of its signature Hainanese bakes and cakes now get a dedicated space to themselves with a standalone bakery at Hillion Mall.

The Perfect Place to Indulge Your Love for Freshly Baked Bread and Pastries

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Hainan Story Bakery, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint! From Swiss rolls to traditional buns to British-Hainanese pastries to sourdough bombs and sourdough pizza, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

A variety of unique and delicious buns and pastries, all with a little modern twist.

All of The Hainan Story’s bread has a signature firm yet fluffy texture. Their traditional recipe and baking style pays homage to an era gone by. The individual bread is prepared and baked in a tin, which if you think about it, truly sets them apart from other bigger bakery chains in Singapore. I have had my regular share of pork floss buns but The Hainan Story’s version, the Orh Nee (Yam Paste) Pork Floss bun was surprisingly good. It’s sweet and savoury, and goes well with a cup of Hainanese Kopi O.

The bakery has an excellent selection of bread to choose from, meaning you can’t just settle on one! I’ve enjoyed the spiciness and fragrance of Uncle Otah bun which is made using homemade mackerel fish otah sourced from Uncle Otah, a local business operating along Joo Chiat Road.

You’re guaranteed to find something that will whet your appetite. The Bacon & Cheese Bun is one such example; housing within it bacon strips, cheese slices all wrapped up in a perfectly golden brown crusty bun – what more could someone want from their morning breakfast? Alternatively, if you’re craving an aromatic truffle mushroom sensation, try their Creamy Truffle Mushroom Bun.

The Hainan Story’s Famed Swiss Rolls Debut New Flavours

The Hainan Story’s now famed Swiss Rolls, first introduced at The Hotel Boss outlet, are now available in mini versions at the bakery so you can easily try all the different flavours. These bite-sized versions are ideal for picnics and afternoon tea. They’ve also added new flavours like Teh Susu, Red Velvet, Ondeh Ondeh, and Oreo. They certainly live up to its tagline “in love with one bite”.

Now the next item definitely caught me by surprise – Hainanese Curry Sour Dough Bomb! Not gonna lie, I typically have my toasted sourdough bread with butter, avocado or poached eggs. This is the first time I had it with Hainanese Curry Chicken and turns out to be delicious! The Hainanese Curry Chicken has a low spiciness level and more on a mild, sweeter flavour, you can definitely smell the presence of the lemongrass. There are generous servings of boneless chicken and potatoes in the curry. The packaging is well thought out too, with the curry chicken sealed in a box so you can easily heat it up.

Now I really do envy those folks living in the Bukit Panjang area! To our overseas friends, if you’re ever in Singapore, be sure to check out the Hainan Story Bakery – you won’t regret it!
