VEP for Driving into Malaysia, All you need to Know Guide 2024

Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is required for all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia, starting 1 October 2024. If you’re planning to drive to Johor Bahru or beyond, here’s a complete guide to everything you need to know about the VEP, from application processes to using the VEP-RFID tag.

VEP Enforcement after 1 October

Drivers without a VEP tag after 1 October may still enter Malaysia by presenting your VEP confirmation slip at the checkpoint, but you must eventually have the RFID tag installed to avoid denied entry into Malaysia in the future.

What is the VEP?

The VEP is an “identity card” for your vehicle, issued by the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ). It allows Malaysia to monitor foreign vehicles entering the country, track their offenses and deter theft or car-cloning syndicates.

Why Do You Need VEP?

By 1 October 2024, Singapore-registered vehicles must have a VEP, which comes with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag to avoid being barred from entering Malaysia.

Who Needs to Apply for the VEP?

  • Private Vehicles: If you own a Singapore-registered private vehicle, you need to apply for the VEP and install the RFID tag by the deadline.
  • Commercial Vehicles and Motorcycles: The VEP is also required for commercial vehicles and motorcycles, but the RFID tag will be rolled out for them at a later date.

How Does the VEP-RFID Tag Work?

The VEP-RFID tag serves as both a vehicle identifier and a payment tool.

The RFID tag allows you to pay the RM20 (S$6) road charge for entering Malaysia, as well as toll fees on the country’s expressways, using designated RFID lanes.

However, it is important to note that the VEP-RFID tag is separate from the Touch ‘n Go RFID tag used for toll payments. Even if you already have a Touch ‘n Go RFID tag, you will still need to apply for the VEP-RFID tag.

Documents Required for the VEP Application

Before you begin your VEP application, ensure you have the following documents:

  1. NRIC or passport
  2. Vehicle road tax and insurance details
  3. Vehicle model and Certificate of Entitlement (COE) details
  4. A copy of your vehicle log card (available from Singapore’s One Motoring website)

Applying for the VEP

You can apply for the VEP through the official website.

Follow these steps:

  1. Register for an account and authenticate it via e-mail.
  2. Log in to the portal and upload your vehicle log card or manually fill in your vehicle’s details.
  3. Once your application is verified, you’ll receive a confirmation e-mail.
  4. Keep track of your application status on vepams.jpj.gov.my.

Getting the VEP-RFID Tag

Once your VEP application is approved, you have two options to collect the RFID tag:

  • Self-Collection: You can collect your tag from designated centres in Johor Bahru, such as the Danga Bay VEP centre. JPJ will notify you via e-mail when your tag is ready for pickup.
  • Home Delivery: You can opt for delivery to your home in Singapore or Malaysia. This will cost approximately RM30 for the service fee, RM10 for the tag, RM15 for postage to Singapore and applicable taxes.

Installation of the VEP-RFID Tag on Your Vehicle

  1. Follow the installation instructions closely to avoid damaging the tag.
  2. The tag should be placed on a clean, dry surface, typically on the left headlamp of your vehicle (at least 5cm away from any metal).
  3. As a security measure, the VEP-RFID Tag is designed with anti-peel and tamper proof features. Once attached, the VEP-RFID tag cannot be removed, otherwise the tag will no longer be functional.
  4. Once installed, take a photo of the tag along with your vehicle’s license plate and upload it to the VEP portal for activation.

Validity of VEP Tag

The VEP Tag is valid for five years from the activation date. You can check the status of your tag through the VEP portal and a reminder will be sent six months before the tag expires.

What If You Already Applied for the VEP But Haven’t Received the Tag?

Try logging back into the VEP portal to update your details or contact JPJ at aduanvep@jpj.gov.my or call +603-7941-2888 for further assistance.

If you’re planning to drive to Malaysia, make sure to start your application well ahead of your trip to avoid delays, fines or entry denials at the checkpoint.
