Planning a UK Trip in 2025? Apply for Your ETA Before You Travel

Dreaming of exploring London’s historic streets, the Scottish Highlands, or the charming Cotswolds in 2025? If the UK is on your travel plan, there’s an important update you need to be aware of. Starting from January 2025, a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system will impact how you enter the country. The ETA is a mandatory requirement, and understanding it now will save you from travel delays later on.

What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a new digital permission system designed to streamline the entry process for visitors who do not currently require a visa for short stays. Think of it as a pre-travel clearance, digitally linked to your passport, that allows you to visit the UK for tourism, business, study, or transit purposes for up to six months. Unlike a visa, which is a more extensive process, the ETA is a quicker and simpler online application.

The ETA is a mandatory requirement for travellers from specific countries, including those who previously enjoyed visa-free travel. This system is being implemented to enhance border security and provide a more efficient experience for legitimate visitors. That said, Singaporeans have to apply for the ETA prior to their trip to the UK. This also means that if you require a visa to travel to the UK, you don’t have to apply for the ETA.

How to Apply for ETA

The most recommended method is through the official “UK ETA app,” available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. It costs £10 to apply. Everyone travelling needs to get an ETA, including babies and children. You can apply for other people.

You cannot get a refund after you apply.

Alternatively, you can apply online through the gov.uk website

You need:

  • the passport you will travel with – not a photocopy or digital passport
  • access to your emails
  • a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay

You will need to upload or take photos of the:

  • passport
  • face of the person applying

You do not need to enter your travel details.

How long does it take

Once you’ve completed the application, submit it. Most applications are processed quickly, often within minutes through the app. However, allow up to 3 working days for a decision. You’ll receive an email confirming your ETA.

While some applications are processed quickly, it’s always best to apply well in advance of your travel dates.

  • If approved, your ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • It allows for multiple visits to the UK within that period, for stays of up to 6 months.
