Day 1

Driving to Johor Bahru and Getting Lunch at Resoran Teck Sing

Since it’s meant to be a relaxing foodie trip, we set off to JB at around 10am. We had heard pretty good reviews about Restoran Teck Sing in JB, especially about their famous Paper Baked Herbal Chicken, so we were excited to try it out. After a smooth drive across the causeway, we reached the eatery at 11:30am. We were starving by the time we arrived and couldn’t wait to see if Restoran Teck Sing lived up to the hype.

Restoran Teck Sing’s signature Paper Baked Herbal Chicken was everything we hoped for and more! The chicken was incredibly tender and flavourful. The herbal marinade infused the meat with a fragrant aroma and a subtle sweetness. Along with the chicken, we feasted on a repertoire of classic tze char dishes. The cereal fried prawns were perfectly crunchy and coated in a sweet and savory sauce, while the sambal kang kong had just the right amount of spice. The omelette with preserved radish was a comforting addition to the meal. We devoured every last bite, leaving no trace of the delicious feast on our plates.

Check-in to our apartment for the night

First up, we needed a comfortable place to stay. We found a popular condominium in the heart of Johor Bahru before our trip, perfect for large groups.

D’ Magnolia Suite @ KSL City Mall

While it’s spacious and conveniently located, please note that it’s a simple setup without fancy amenities or complimentary snacks. Just bring your own toiletries and supplies, and you’re all set!

Afternoon Tea at Tian Xi Kopi

After checking in to our apartment, we decided to treat ourselves to a much-needed foot reflexology session at KSL Mall. Feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, it was the perfect time for some afternoon tea. We shopped around and chanced upon Tian Xi Kopi, a bustling oriental-style cafe with a tempting display of egg tarts and chiffon cakes. We decided to try their signature ondeh lava cake and steamed milk egg pudding with mango  dessert, and we were not disappointed! We would definitely visit again for another round of cakes and drinks!

Time to burn some calories with more walking and shopping! We book a grab ride to The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey. It’s about 10 to 15 minutes away from KSL Mall.

What we know about this mall is that it’s absolutely massive! With seemingly endless corridors and multiple levels, it felt like we could spend days exploring this retail paradise. And it’s perfect for clocking in your 10,000 steps – we kid you not. Compared to KSL Mall, Mid Valley Southkey boasts a wider variety of both international and local brands. The dining choices were equally diverse, with everything from trendy cafes to authentic Malaysian restaurants. We were overwhelmed in a good way!

Dinner at Arashi Shabu-Shabu

And now, for the moment we’ve all been waiting for… dinner! We were so excited to be at Arashi Shabu-Shabu, a restaurant we’d heard rave reviews about. And it definitely lived up to the hype! Why? Because of its delicious range of soup bases – from the classic Tonkotsu and Sukiyaki to the more unique Tom Yum and Herbal Chicken – and the fact that you get your own individual hotpot! Having our own individual hotpots meant we could each choose our favourite soup base and get to try the different broths!

The aroma of simmering broths filled the air as we eagerly waited for our ingredients to cook. The thinly sliced beef practically melted in our mouths, and the fresh vegetables added a satisfying crunch! And the best part? We could really have our fill without breaking the bank, thanks to the favourable currency exchange. With full stomachs and happy hearts, we left Arashi Shabu-Shabu feeling completely satisfied.

Late night snack and drinks at Avery

As most of the shops were closed after 10pm, we decided to head back to our apartment to rest. On our way, we popped by Avery Day, a popular convenience chain known for its variety of snacks and imported goodies. Avery Day beckoned us in for a late-night treat before calling it a night.

Day 2

Breakfast at Pin Ming Xuan before making our way back to Singapore

For our last day in JB, we started with a dim sum feast at the famous Pin Ming Xuan. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with the chatter of families and friends enjoying their morning dim sum. Pin Ming Xuan is a bit of a legend in JB, known for its traditional Cantonese dim sum and fresh ingredients, so we knew we were in for a treat. We ordered a variety of classic dim sum dishes, including fluffy char siu bao, delicate har gow, and flavourful stir-fried carrot cake. The claypot porridge was a standout. The aroma of freshly steamed dumplings filled the air, and the delicate flavours of each dish were a delight to the palate.

Life in Singapore can be expensive. But just a short drive away, Johor Bahru offers a welcome break for our wallets. It’s no wonder Singaporeans don’t mind the jam.
