Time flies! It’s August, Singapore’s birthday month which means there’s going to be spectacular fireworks, light installations, National Day festivities happening in different parts of Singapore, and listening to your neighbours crooning to Home for the umpteen times. But that’s not all, our local artists and art groups have developed programmes for you to enjoy from the comfort of your own home throughout the month. Let’s make it a meaningful and fun celebration in spite of the pandemic we’re living in!
Enjoy #SGCultureAnywhere this long weekend with an interesting line-up of music, games, virtual exhibitions and even up your selfie game with interactive AR filters!
1. Share Singapore’s Heritage and Culture with AR filters
Take your selfie game to the next level this National Day, with these three interactive augmented reality (AR) filters on the theme of Singapore’s Past, Present and Future by music producer Huang Peh Linde. Featuring a collection of original traditional-contemporary soundscapes and music, these filters are fun ways to make memories with elements of Singapore’s ethnic heritage and local culture. 2. Celebrate National Day on Animal Crossing
For those who are obsessed with Animal Crossing, you can gather your tribe (more than 5 pax allowed) and host your National Day Party! Local Illustrator Aida Sa’ad has created a Singaporean-style wardrobe featuring traditional ethnic costumes, Singapore Airlines Kebaya and even the nostalgic PAP Community Foundation (PCF) uniform!

3. Enjoy A Live Concert by Local Musicians – Conversations to Flinders Station
Catch the first of four new original compositions by local drummer and video artist Jeremy Yeo in collaboration with various local musicians, as a tribute titled Singapore, My Home this National Day.
The video will feature original sounds using improvised digital music effects and accompanied by video art, visuals and footage of familiar sights around us. Tune in at 8pm on 6 August on Facebook Live, or YouTube and Instagram from wherever you are. Other videos will be released on 13, 20 and 27 August subsequently.
4. Remember the People Who Keep Singapore Safe and Running
The Silent Front – Stories Around Us by Spot Pocket Opera Theatre is a four-part online musical series that features interviews sharing the struggles and experiences of frontline and voluntary personnels in social sectors, interspersed with classical music performances. From 8 August onwards, catch an episode of the series via Spot Pocket Opera Theatre’s Facebook Page every Saturday.
5. You’re Invited to Co-Create A Thriving Singapore – A Virtual Exhibition
We’re sure you would have heard a lot about Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative, aside from improving livelihoods, monitoring environment sustainability, what are the possibilities that technology and data can bring to bridge human connections and enhance our wellbeing for a “Thriving Singapore”?
Share your vision of a “Thriving Singapore” here at www.thrivingsingapore.com before 31 August 2020 and stand a chance to get your symbol picked as an inspiration for this virtual exhibition on 10 October 2020. 15 items/symbols that are representative of what it means to be a “Thriving Singapore” will be crowdsourced from the public and used by 14 artists, alongside with ALH Studio and Creativesatwork to create new collaborative digital artworks.
Last but not least, stay tuned for special guest musicians and dancers for a Thriving Singapore Night!

Digital Presentation Grant for the Arts
As part of the Digitalisation Fund, the Digital Presentation Grant for the Arts (DPG) aims to support efforts by artists and arts organisations to present their work in digital form or via digital mediums, during this COVID-19 period. Through the grant, NAC aims to create work opportunities for arts practitioners while at the same time, develop industry capabilities in producing digital arts content.
