TAIWAN, Chiayi – Spanning 1,700km Taiwan’s railway network is integral in facilitating the transfer of people and goods all over the oblong island. With a staggering 3 million trips served each day, the trains of Taiwan are as hardworking as their passengers.
They are also as adept in ferrying dreams. The annual Spring Festival sees a swell in ridership as the population moves southward, returning to childhood homes and the warmth of family left behind in favour of brighter prospects in northern metropolitan Taipei. But those prone to homesickness need not fret. The high-speed rail puts even the country’s southernmost city, Kaohsiung, a mere 2.5 hours away.
