Catch A Play in W!ld Rice Theatre
SG Bicentennial, otherwise known as 200 years of Raffles’ arrival in Singapore since 1819, has sparked controversy about our past and present identities. The historical commemoration has been seen as a nod to colonialism and somewhat disregarded five centuries of history before the arrival of the colonialist. How much colonialism has shaped the discourse of Singapore’s history, and why are we putting Raffles on a pedestal?
Catch Wild Rice Theatre’s latest production, “Merdeka / 獨立 /சுதந்திரம் “, which sees the formation of a group called Raffles Must Fall to examine our country’s colonial legacy and to help us understand the days of colonial subjugation and how it fuels the dream of independence.
Written by the award-winning playwright, Alfian Sa’at in collaboration with up-and-coming playwright Neo Hai Bin, this provocative and moving new play examines how our history and humanity have been shaped – and shattered – by the forces of colonialism.

Explore the Early Days of Singapore as an Emporium of the East
Now if you’re curious about the history of Singapore before 1819, the National Museum of Singapore offers to take you on a journey back in time – some 200 years ago. You’ll be surprised to learn that Singapore was already a bustling maritime port in the region attracting traders and merchants from afar. Unlike the general perception that Singapore was a sleepy fishing village before the British arrived.
An Old New World: From the East Indies to the Founding of Singapore, the 1600s – 1819, is the latest exhibition which chronicles the early days of Singapore as an Emporium of the East before the founding of modern Singapore. Featuring over 220 artefacts across six thematic zones– you’ll get to witness two centuries of development and forces at play which inevitably led to the events in 1819.

The Bubble Tea Factory at SCAPE
