When autumn rolls around, most travellers immediately think of Japan or South Korea for fall foliage. But here’s one destination you shouldn’t overlook: Taiwan.
Beyond Taipei’s night markets and cafe scene, Taiwan’s mountainous regions put on a pretty impressive autumn show of their own.
If you’re planning a Taiwan trip between October and December, add these three spots to your itinerary: Fushoushan Farm, Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area and Wuling Farm.
Can you visit all three in one trip? Yes, but we don’t recommend cramming them into day trips from Taipei. All three destinations are located in Taiwan’s mountainous region, where winding roads mean travel times can be much longer than they appear on Google Maps. But if you are looking to do a day trip, then it is best to base yourself in Taichung instead of Taipei.

Fushoushan Farm — A classic autumn escape in the mountains

Set high in Taichung’s Heping District, Fushoushan Farm (福壽山農場) is one of Taiwan’s most recognisable autumn destinations.

As temperatures begin to fall from October onwards, maple trees around the farm gradually shift from green to deep shades of red and orange, creating a striking contrast against the surrounding mountain landscape.
One of the most photographed spots is Songlu, a Japanese-style wooden residence framed by maple trees. During the peak foliage period, fallen leaves gather around the building, giving the area a distinctly autumnal atmosphere.

Nearby, Yuanyang Lake offers another scenic stop, especially for travellers who prefer a quieter stroll surrounded by highland scenery.

Beyond the foliage, Fushoushan Farm is also known for its orchards, gardens and sweeping views across Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range. Rather than treating it as a quick photo stop, consider spending a night in the area to enjoy the slower pace of the mountains.

Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area — For hiking through autumn colours

Prefer your autumn leaves with a side of adventure? Head to Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area (奧萬大國家森林遊樂區) in Nantou.
The forest recreation area is best explored on foot, with walking trails weaving through valleys, woodland and river scenery. As autumn sets in, the landscape becomes a mix of evergreen forest and changing foliage, with pockets of yellow, orange and crimson appearing throughout the park.
One of the highlights is the Aowanda Suspension Bridge, which opens up views across the surrounding valley and forest.
The foliage here also feels a little wilder and more natural. Don’t expect every tree to turn bright red at the same time. Instead, the landscape becomes a patchwork of green, yellow, orange and crimson.
Set aside at least half a day here and wear comfortable walking shoes. This is the place to visit if you enjoy hiking, nature and a quieter alternative to Taiwan’s busier sightseeing spots.
Admission: NT$100 per adult at the time of writing, due to partial closures within the park. Regular admission is NT$150 on weekdays and NT$200 on holidays. Check the official Taiwan Forest Recreation website for the latest rates before visiting.
Wuling Farm: A quieter side of Taiwan’s highlands

You might already know Wuling Farm (武陵農場) for its famous cherry blossom season, but autumn is another great reason to visit. You can also book an overnight stay at the Wuling Farm Guest House or Hoya Resort.
Located at high elevation in Taichung, the farm enjoys cooler temperatures and expansive mountain scenery throughout the year. In autumn, sections of the landscape turn shades of red and gold while evergreen trees and surrounding peaks provide a dramatic backdrop.
Wuling Farm feels more spacious and relaxed than a typical sightseeing attraction. There is no need to rush from one viewpoint to another. Instead, take your time exploring the valley, following walking trails and stopping along the way for views of the surrounding mountains.

The area is also home to Qijiawan Creek, famous for the rare Formosan landlocked salmon—a species endemic to Taiwan.

See a different side of Taiwan this autumn
Autumn foliage conditions also vary from year to year depending on elevation, rainfall and temperature. Colours generally begin appearing from late October, with some areas looking their best in November and into early winter.
So if you’ve already done Taipei, Jiufen and the usual Taiwan itinerary, perhaps it’s time to head higher into the mountains.
And remember, mountain weather can be significantly colder than Taipei or Taichung. Pack layers, comfortable walking shoes and a rain jacket.
