Who is yearning to get away from the busyness of the city and spend some time relaxing in a quiet place, enjoying the sun, sea, and sand while listening to the sound of the waves lapping on the shore? Absolutely me.
If you asked me where my favourite beach destination is, I would say the Greek islands. That, however, will consume all of my annual leave, of which I sadly have very little left. However, there are ways to make the most of my weekends, especially given Singapore’s convenient proximity to numerous tropical islands that are just a ferry ride away.
A Seaside Escape
To make the most of my weekends and to get more bang for my buck, I’ve decided to check out The Westin Desaru Coast which has garnered thousands of positive reviews on Google. This luxurious 5-star beachfront hotel is just a 90-minute ferry ride away from Singapore. Pro tip: Once you’ve cleared the immigration counter at Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal, look out for the Desaru Coast free shuttle bus that will bring guests to the hotels and attractions. The bus journey from the ferry terminal to The Westin Desaru Coast is around 15 minutes.
A refreshing drink and a cool towel were waiting for me when I arrived, and the check-in process was smooth. The Westin Hotel is also known for its signature White Tea fragrance, which instantly puts people in a relaxed vacation mood.
The resort is tucked away in verdant surroundings, and its 275 rooms each have a private balcony or terrace with stunning views of the South China Sea or the gardens.
The room was larger than I expected, and the view of the ocean was lovely. I was delighted to find a small bottle of lavender balm on the nightstand for guests to wind down naturally and enjoy a good night’s rest. Not forgetting the iconic Westin Heavenly bed, a symbol of luxurious and restorative rest that makes sure guests wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.
Weekend nightly rates of around SGD485 are comparable to those of 4- to 5-star modern hotels in Singapore, minus the balcony and ocean view. Then again, at The Westin Desaru Coast, the rooms are bigger and the view is better. The most affordable nightly rate during the week starts from SGD223, which is a great deal for people who are on a tight budget.
With spectacular views of the sparkling ocean, spacious rooms, an infinity pool, peaceful surroundings, and a sweet strip of (clean) beach and sea sports facilities, this place was better than I thought it would be.
Whether it’s a quiet retreat by the water or new adventures like cruising on the Sedili Wetlands, this coastal town has got a lot to offer.
A river cruise down the Sedili Wetland is a fantastic way to learn about the mangrove and biodiversity of the wetlands. This is a great option for guests looking for a light activity to do after breakfast.
Rejuvenate the mind and body at Desaru Coast
The combination of a good book and a refreshing beverage by the pool or just lying on the sunbed by the beach makes me happy. No cellphone, no laptop, just staring into the horizon and enjoying being present in the moment. Idleness is often regarded as unproductive in a fast-paced city, which is why a beach vacation allows us to reset and refocus on our well-being.
Every Saturday and Sunday, the resort offers Weekend Outdoor Yoga. These one-hour classes are led by certified yoga instructors in the garden or on the beach. Water, yoga mats, and a face towel are provided. All you have to do is be present and listen to the instructor. The sound of gentle waves lapping on the shore elevates the entire yoga flow and the skies slowly light up as I practise; it was a great experience to kickstart the day! Now I’m secretly wishing for a beach cycle a.k.a spin class but take it outdoors with fresh ocean air and sunsets.
Aside from outdoor yoga, guests who enjoy running can join The Westin Run Concierge for a scenic run.
Now for those looking to unwind completely, check out the Heavenly Spa housed on the lower-ground floor of The Westin Desaru Coast. It features private treatment rooms for couples and individuals, as well as a reception area, lounge, and locker room. In fact, guests are encouraged to arrive 30-60 minutes early so they have plenty of time to unwind in the relaxation lounge, take a dip in the whirlpool, steam in the experience shower, or simply enjoy the peace and quiet before their scheduled service.
Getting to The Westin Desaru Coast
Currently, the ferries to Desaru Coast only operate from Thursday to Sunday. If you want to visit Desaru Coast during the weekday (Monday to Wednesday), you’ll have to travel by car via the woodlands checkpoint.
The Westin Desaru Coast, with its sweeping ocean views and excellent amenities, is the ideal place to spend a relaxing weekend. I can see myself escaping to Desaru Coast to relax from time to time.
