Autumn’s arrival in southern Germany, Bavaria, is synonymous with Oktoberfest – the world’s famous beer festival. Like many others, when you hear the word Oktoberfest, you’d instantly think that it’s all about German beer. Well, you’re mostly correct.

But did you know that the two-century-old tradition Oktoberfest began as a royal wedding celebration in 1810? All the citizens of Munich were invited and the five days of celebration commenced with a horse race and a veritable feast.

Today, Oktoberfest in Munich typically runs for about 16 to 18 days, and have welcomed over 6 million visitors both locals and tourists alike, and the total beer consumption reached a record 7.5 million Liters last year!

What’s interesting to know is that Oktoberfest has become a global phenomenon and is widely celebrated in other parts of the world. Everyone loves a fresh brew and a good party! It should come as no surprise that Singapore being a cosmopolitan city is also joining in the festivities.
