Are you someone who frequently listens to music whether you’re on the go or at home? The fact that Singapore hosts some of the biggest musicians periodically, cements the fact that Singaporeans love their music, no matter what genre or artist. However, what often is overlooked is the hidden gem of talents that hide amongst our own. From buskers, to full fledged-aspiring and successful local talent, there is a market here worth carving out a space with recognition for.
Hear65 is a dedicated space in a partnership of the National Arts Council, SMRT and Bandwagon’s Singapore music arm Hear65 aimed to increase the exposure of local talent to the public. The whole concept of allowing people to accidentally come across new artists that have caught their attention is one that is the primary aim of this initiative. This new campaign ‘I Play SG Music’ promotes a playlist curated of local acts and artists to the public at MRT stations, shopping malls, and as you pass by around Singapore. This initiative was successfully implemented at both Funan Mall, Our Tampines Hub and played across all of SMRT’s stations and interchanges. With the current success this campaign has seen so far, there are plans to roll this initiative out to more public areas where exposure is likely to be greater.
This initiative brings together a range of talented newer acts and more familiar names in the local scene creating distinct playlists for different environments that the playlist would be played at. For example, there are separate playlists for MRT stations sectioned into ‘morning commute’, ‘afternoon commute’ and ‘evening commute’. Similar to how Spotify’s algorithm curates similar songs to your preferred genre and tracks, these songs in this playlist have been handpicked to fit the the vibe of these commuting times of the day, to make the travel experience more pleasant for the commuter as well.
