SPAIN, Barcelona – Looking down from the summit of Mount Tibidabo, the highest peak in Barcelona, Spain, the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus stands atop with its imposing facade.
Templo del Tibidabo (as its more commonly known), is without a doubt a cultural landmark of Barcelona often mentioned in the same breath with the famed Sacré-Cœur Basilica in Paris. An amalgamation of Romanesque and neo-Gothic features, this architectural wonder took over half a century from the first stone laid in 1902 to its completion in 1961. Through the Baroque main entrance, you’ll be greeted with a neo-Byzantine crypt adorned with beautiful and intricate artwork.
Perched at the top of the church is the statue of the Sacred Heart, which overlooks the church and by extension, the city of Barcelona. Templo del Tibidabo’s silhouette is unmistakable, entrenching itself as a mainstay of Barcelona’s horizon.
