JAPAN, Osaka – You know it as the place with the Glico Running Man, but Dotonbori has much more to offer than just an amusing selfie spot. The famously gaudy district is chock-full of colourful signages and gigantic billboards that give everything a wash of candy hues and carnival-like atmosphere.
The area is named after enterprising local merchant Yasui Doton, who envisioned an expansion of the Umezu River into a new waterway that would link the local canal network with the Kizugawa River. The idea proved sound, bringing an influx of trade and blossoming of the area as an entertainment and food district.
Today, Dotonbori is known for having some of Osaka’s best restaurants, food stalls and bars – a hard-won reputation in the food-obsessed city. Locals will gleefully point you to Dotonburi for kuidaore, which means to indulge in food until you fall into financial ruin!
Despite the rather alarming connotations, a food trip to Dotonbori is a rewarding adventure. If you’re not sure what to eat, let the gigantic, animated mascots beckoning from on high guide your appetite.
