JAPAN, Nagano – Castle fans will know Matsumoto Castle as one of Japan’s premier castles, a distinction earned on the back of its stunning stature and original wooden interiors that provide a unique authenticity not readily felt in it counterparts rebuilt of ferro-concrete.

Matsumoto Castle – sometimes known as Crow Castle on account of its sombre colour scheme – still retains many of its war-time features, including stone drop traps, archer openings, turrets and observation decks.

Today, visitors enjoy Matsumoto Castle for the sprawling views of the surrounding countryside. It is also a famed spot for sakura viewing, drawing throngs of cherry blossom lovers who come to admire the lovely somei yoshino trees that stand in their hundreds around the castle’s moat.
