Tips for Travelling in Seoul on a Budget

South Korea has a reputation for being a relatively expensive destination (Hint: Squid Game) but with a bit of research and planning, you can visit this beautiful country and still maintain your budget while seeing all that it has to offer!

  1. Choose your accommodation wisely. There are a number of great hotels that offer rooms for under SGD250 per night. Use promo code <SK20OFF> to enjoy $20 off for your hotel bookings here.

2. Consider using public transportation. Seoul has an excellent public transportation system that can save you money on taxi fare or rental cars.

3. Take advantage of free activities. There are plenty of things to do in Seoul that won’t cost you a dime. Visit one of the many parks or museums, or take a walk through one of the city’s historic neighbourhoods. Alternatively, check out this list of activities in Seoul under SGD100.

4. Don’t forget to get your tax refund receipt if you have been going on a shopping spree. Tax refund means you can get the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Individual Consumption Tax on certain items refunded at the airport before leaving Korea. You’re eligible to get a tax refund on goods worth over 30,000 KRW but under 5 million KRW in total. The items must be bought within three months of your departure.

5. Carry Cash. Although the majority of businesses accept credit cards, you might be charged a 1000 (US$0.85) credit-card fee. When shopping at traditional markets, cash is also a good idea because sellers are more willing to haggle over prices when you’re paying by cash.
