With an emerald blanket of tea leaves adorning the rolling hills as far as the eyes can see, it is, without a doubt, always tea-time in Cameron Highlands. Throughout the year, the temperature in this region falls between 13 °C and 22 °C, with occasional showers which provide the ideal condition for the production of robust, flavorful and aromatic teas. Among other things, Cameron Highlands offers relatively affordable food and accommodation. So, if you’re planning for a short retreat to escape from the city’s heat and haze, this green sanctuary will soothe your eyes and mind.
Tea Fields
For most tourists, a trip to Cameron Highlands is never complete without visiting the Boh Tea Plantation. And if you were to opt for a tour of the tiny town, chances are this popular tea plantation would be one of the first destinations on your tour itinerary.
Besides learning about the interesting history of the local tea industry, you’ll also get the opportunity to explore the wonderful rows and rows of tea plantations themselves. Enjoy frolicking through the tea fields whilst taking a ton of selfies for your social media. If you’re on a family trip, we’re sure the little ones would also enjoy the cooling breeze and magnificent greenery.
Last but not least, do remember to spend some time admiring the “prettea” (pun intended) scenery whilst sipping on a fresh, hot cup of local tea from the deck. Local tip: Try waking up early to catch the sunrise in Cameron Highlands tea plantations. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
Vegetable Farms and Markets
While the Boh Tea Plantation is a must-visit destination on everyone’s list, you’d be mistaken to think that is all Cameron Highlands has to offer. Apart from its renowned tea plantations, there are plenty of farms around the region. Take your pick from the impressive variety of farms, ranging from vegetables and fruits to flower gardens and butterfly farms. It’s a refreshing change of scenery here, especially for city dwellers who spend a lot of time on their phones. How about picking up a tip or two to grow your vegetables and even show off your green fingers? You can also harvest some vegetables at the farm and if buying straight from the farm isn’t for you, then head over to Brinchang Night Market.
Local tip: The Brinchang Night Market is only open during the weekends, so plan your trip accordingly!
Otherwise, head on over to the cactus farm to admire the prickly green vegetation that you can even buy as a souvenir. Alternatively, the bee farms are also a great choice to bring the little ones to. Sample and buy fresh honey that is both tasty and healthy!
The most talked about tourist attraction aside from the tea plantations in this region is the lavender garden. Situated in between two villages Trinkap and Kuala Terla, the Cameron Lavender Garden bears resemblance to the lavender fields of Hokkaido and Taiwan but on a smaller scale. Oh, and lest we forget, give the homemade lavender ice cream a try when you’re there. The sweet and cool dessert with the lush violet blooms in the background makes for an insta-worthy snap!
Strawberry Season All Year Round
While we’re on the subject of lush greenery, Cameron Highlands is also home to a couple of strawberry farms. The more popular farms include Big Red Strawberry, Kok Lim Strawberry Farm, and Raju’s Hill Strawberry to name a few.
Thanks to Cameron’s chilly environment and high altitude, these farms are literally the only place in Malaysia where you can pick strawberries off the vine all year round!
Best of all, treat yourself to freshly-made strawberry-filled desserts and milkshakes at the farms! Yummy!
Scenic Hiking Trails in Cameron Highlands
Looking for something a little more adventurous? Take a leisure hike through one of Cameron’s scenic routes!
If the weather permits, go on a hike to one of Cameron Highland’s many waterfalls. The popular ones include Parit Waterfall and Robinson Waterfall near Tanah Rata. The gentle roar of the waterfall and the sight of the verdant landscape are definitely worth burning some calories for. On top of that, you get stunning views of the valley and the forest!
But that’s not all.
While you’re out in the wilderness, take a moment to appreciate Mother Nature’s creation in the form of thickly wooded areas with soft green moss covering almost everything. Aptly known as the Mossy Forest, this otherworldly albeit picturesque area is located at the peak of Brinchang mountain.
For those who are dauntless and fit, the hike is a relatively easy one as it features a two-kilometre boardwalk whereby you will come face-to-face with this straight-out-of-a-fantasy scene at the end of the trail.
Apart from that, keep your eyes peeled for colourful plants including orchids, carnivorous pitcher plants, and more!
Cameron Highlands is one of the coolest (literally) places you can visit in Malaysia. And as any inhabitants of our Southeast Asia climate could attest to, humidity and heat, unfortunately, come hand-in-hand.
So any opportunity to escape the blazing heat (and accompanying back sweat) of the city is a welcome one in our books.
Also, you’d have undoubtedly noticed that the haze is back at unhealthy levels (so far). Take a short weekend escape and head on over to Cameron Highlands to avoid the haze! Your lungs will thank you for it.
How to Get to Cameron Highlands from Singapore
Have you decided to make the next holiday trip to Cameron Highlands? Great! There are three ways to get to this mountainous region in Pahang from Singapore: By car, bus, or plane.
By Car
Quite the straightforward approach, you’ll be able to arrive at your destination within hours (7-8 to be exact) by driving directly from Singapore to Cameron Highlands. Do be warned though, the journey (563KM) will be rather tiring unless you take turns at the wheel.
On the other hand, hiring a private car is quite costly and we don’t recommend doing that. If self-driving is not an option, then your best bet (cheapest too) is to take a bus.
By Bus
There are coaches departing from the country to Cameron Highlands every single day. So you don’t have to worry about scheduling issues. Though, buses tend to take longer to cover the same distance compared to driving yourself there.
Bus operators to and from Cameron Highlands include Starmart Express and The One Travel & Tours.
By Plane
And finally, taking a plane from Singapore is also an option. But, you should know that Cameron Highlands does not have an airport. Thus, you will still be required to take a coach from the airport to the town.
The two airports you should consider are the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh.
The former is more accessible, with multiple daily flight options, whereas there are only about three flights daily from Singapore for the latter. Though, the travelling duration from KLIA to Cameron via coach is longer as compared to the journey from the airport in Ipoh.
Once you’ve landed, go ahead and take one of the many bus options from the airport. You’ll arrive at Cameron Highlands in no time!
